The green movement in Indonesia is gaining momentum, driven by youth activism, faith-based initiatives, and corporate responsibility. From grassroots campaigns to national policies, efforts to promote environmental sustainability are expanding across the archipelago.
Young climate leaders are at the forefront, with over 1,000 Indonesian members of The Climate Reality Project advocating for urgent climate action. One notable figure, Robertus Darren Radyan, began promoting “Go Green” awareness as a child and has since co-organized climate strikes and digital campaigns involving youth, celebrities, and government officials.
Faith also plays a growing role. The “Green Islam” movement is emerging, exemplified by an Islamic boarding school in Garut, West Java, building twin eco-mosques from 12 tonnes of recycled plastic and 24 tonnes of rice husks. This initiative promotes zero-waste living among local communities.
Organizations like Teens Go Green Indonesia (TGGI) are engaging youth through educational events focused on plastic pollution, urban forests, and marine conservation. Meanwhile, state-owned power company PLN has committed to achieving net-zero emissions by 2060, investing in renewable energy and carbon credit programs.
Despite challenges such as deforestation and coal dependency, Indonesia’s green movement reflects a rising national consciousness. With increasing public participation and innovative solutions, the country is taking meaningful steps toward a more sustainable future.
